In 2011 Air Force Master Sgt. Ben Seekell and his military working dog, Charlie, stepped on a land-mine during their deployment to Bagram Afghanistan. Sgt. Seekell ultimately lost his left leg, below the knee. He has since returned to active duty and participated in both the Warrior Games and Invictus Games, earning medals at each.
