Mr. Van Deursthrew himself into the work with aheart in full sympathy with it, and theresults show what can be effected byGods blessing upon a steady course oflabor, in which preaching the gospelwith simplicity, visiting from house tohouse, and practical sympathy, are themain elements. At first the converts were connectedwith Calvary Church, but their increas-ing numbers, in 1863, justified their or-ganization into a separate were elected, and Mr. VanDeurs chosen pastor. Thus three stepswere taken ; First, the Mission school;. Second, the Evangelist and Congrega-tion ; Third, the organized Church. Andnow a larger house of worship was need-ed. This need was met by one large-souled man, the late M. W. Baldwin, atwhose cost a handsome church waserected, capable of accommodating eighthundred persons. Its corner-stone waslaid on an ever-memorable day to Phila- delphia, July 2nd, 18G3, whilst the armiesof Union and of Secession were in deadlystrife at Gettysburgh. The church isin a locality built up with small housesfor mechanics and laborers, and Deurs efforts have been mainlyamong this class. From them he hasgathered his congregation.
