HABITAT: Moist to dry deciduous forests, mostly in acidic soils. STATUS: Rare in Canada, Possibly extirpated in Connecticut and New York; threatened in Ohio; rare in Delaware, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Vermont. NOTES: Carex willdenowii is primarily an eastern species of the coastal plain and Appalachian Mountains and is very local north of its main range. This species is easily overlooked because of its small size and the pistillate scales that nearly conceal the perigynia, making the plants appear to be vegetative. Closely related to C. jamesii Schwein, of rich, calcareous soils, C. willdenowii is easily distinguished by its ellipsoid perigynium bodies in contrast to the globose ones of C. jamesii. Previous reports of C. willdenowii from Ontario (Scoggan 1978-1979) were based on misidentified specimens of C. jamesii and C. umbellata Schkuhr ex Willd, Previous reports of C. willdenowii from Quebec (Scoggan 1978-1979) were based on misidentified specimens of C. umbellata.
