Dortmund / Castrop-Rauxel, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany - Renaturalization of the Emscher at the Mengede flood control reservoir. The currently straightened Emscher (pictured here), is regaining curves and will then meander through its new floodplain. After the construction of a parallel sewer, the Emscher will be completely free of sewage since 2022. The river was previously an open, above-ground combined sewer with rainwater and wastewater.
