Virtual reality telesurgery. This is the ARGONAUTE 3D system, designed to allow surgeons and doctors from around the world to discuss a case and work in real-time on a 3D image of their patient. Each surgeon or doctor is represented by an avatar (two seen here). Laparoscopic surgery (abdominal keyhole surgery) instruments are seen inserted into the patient, and internal body scans are seen on the screens, with X-rays at left. ARGONAUTE 3D has been developed by French Telecom and IRCAD, the French research institute for digestive system cancers, at EITS, the European Institute of Telesurgery, in Strasbourg, France.
