The Kabuki Actor Ichikawa Danjūrō V, Edo period (1615–1868), ca. 1773, Japan, Polychrome woodblock print; ink and color on paper, H. 11 3/8 in. ( cm); W. 5 7/8 in. ( cm), Prints, Katsukawa Shunshō (Japanese, 1726–1792), In this print, the fifth Ichikawa Danjūrō strikes a serious pose and looks at his reflection in a water basin. The later handwritten inscription identifies the figure as Danjūrō VI, who died at age twenty-two in May 1799, but most likely it is Danjūrō V
