Kernite crystal. Kernite is a monoclinic crystalline form of sodium tetraborate tetrahydrate. It is soft and very light, and may form very large crystals (one of metres has been recorded). Kernite forms in playa lakes near hydrothermal springs, and is a principal ore of boron.
