HIATAL HERNIA, DRAWING

A hiatal hernia is the protrusion of the upper part of the stomach into the thorax. The opening permitting this usually only allows for the esophagus to pass through. Hiatal hernias may cause digestive problems ( gastro-esophageal reflux). Over time, this may cause chronic irritations and esophagitis. Drug treatment is the most commonly administered form of treatment, but for severe cases surgery may be necessary.
