Globe Earth and map, centred on the north Pacific Ocean, showing the dispersion of two radioactive isotopes released into the atmosphere by the Fukushima nuclear disaster. The atmospheric distribution of caesium-137 and iodine-131 is colour-coded from white (0 kilobecquerels per metre squared), through yellow ( kBq/m2) and red (10kBq/m2) to burgundy (40kBq/m2). The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant was damaged during the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. It led to the meltdown of three of the nuclear reactors and leak of radioactive material.
