Theother four make connection with thesethree systems at various points upon theirroutes, and, as a whole, they render espe-cially accessible to Houston, the tradecenter, and more directly than they do anyother city, all that vast region popularly,but somewhat vaguely, designated as theSouthwest; which region, we may say,includes all the country south of the 39thparallel of latitude, and west of the 90thmeridian, which embraces the whole ofseven States and territories, and in largepart six others, and which, roughly esti-mated, has an area of 1,250,000 squaremiles. The total mileage of the roads centeringat Houston is 8,550;
