The Current in Each Arc CircuitOne of These Panels s Controlled with of work, on others it was the exception rather than the investigation the trouble was diagnosed as being dueio the lack of heat control when using the ordinary type ofwelding outfit. The problem of designing a satisfactory machine was assigned to the railroads chief electricalengineer and after a series of experiments a machine wasproduced which could be set to operate at a certain currentvalue and would automatically keep within six per cent ofthat value as long as the arc was maintained. This equip-ment is now being placed on the market by the WilsonWelder & Metals Companj-, New York. The Wilson electric welder consists essentially of a motorgenerator set, an automatic control panel, and a weldingtool with a remote control switch attached. The generator. Welding Tool or Electrode Holder with Distant Control Switch is of the constant potential type, with interpoles andlaminated field structure. The control panel performs ageneral function of maintaining a constant current in thewelding circuit, regardless of variations in the resistance ofthe welding circuit. This is accomplished by the carbonpile rheostat (No. 5 in the illustration of the panel) theresistance of which is varied by a lever mechanism operatedby the electro-magnetic coil 29, Both rheostat and coil areconnected in series with the welding circuit, consequentlythe action of the coil on the lever is governed by the amountof current in the circuit; a decrease of current allows themagnet plunger to drop, compressing the cartion pile, thereby
