This explained why the shooting box had been builtso high up, in a most dreary situation at all eventsti the rainy season. Shortly before reaching it, weentered upon a new zone of plant life. Up till now the tree tops had formed an almostcontinuous screen, but now there were occasionalgaps, and in the clearances a herbaceous plant grewwith indescribable luxuriance in the black, spongysoil. In places it was replaced by a little forest oftree ferns. (Illus. 201.) My heart sank at the pros-pect, and I had less hope of reaching the summit ofthe Peak.
