Breast reconstruction surgery scars. Post-operative view of the breasts of a 47-year-old woman who has had surgery to excise breast cancer. The operation was a mastectomy (breast removal) followed by reconstruction of the breast using a DIEP (deep inferior epigastric perforator) flap. This flap of tissue (skin, fat and blood vessels) is taken from the lower abdomen (scar visible) and attached to the mastectomy site to reconstruct the shape and appearance of the excised breast.
