The removal ofthese 7,600 cubic yards of huge masses of hard debrisand stones is rendered much easier by the fact that itjoins my last years great cutting, which runs quitehorizontally from the northern declivity as far as theTower, and is therefore very well adapted for the useof man-carts. In order to extract from this excava-tion all the objects of the greatest use to archaBology,I am having the walls made perpendicular, as in factI have had them made in almost all of the othercuttings.
