Four large Sarcophagi are also placed here: 2120, with scenes fromthe life of Achilles (one side modern); 2119, with a battle of the Amazons,and two recumbent sepulchral figures on the lid; 1335, with Endymionand Selene; 1336, with Bacchus and Ariadne. Between the last two is alarge lion, in limestone. We next reach the Grand Escalibb, or Escaliek Daku, whichascends to the Picture Gallery (p. 109). The ceiling of this stair-case is decorated with mosaics after Lenepveu, referring to Antiquityand the Renaissance, which are represented by allegorical figuresof the principal countries, and by medallions and the names oftheir most illustrious artists. — At the top stands the Nike ofSamothrace (p. 109).
