The following year he formedthe firm of Leonard & Izard, which made many importantinstallations of central stations and electric railways. In the firm was bought out by the Edison interests, became general manager of the combined Edisoninterests for the United States and Canada, with headquartersin New York. In 1891 he completed his inventions of theWard Leonard system of motor control, and later introducedseveral other iniiiortant inventions in the electrical J. A. On January 1,1904, he became the testing depart-inent of the Chicago &Xorth Western. In Feb-ruary, 1905, he becamechief chemist of theMissouri Pacific, in whichJ ^ McFarland position he remained un- til May, 1909. when hetook charge of tbe St. Louis office of the Dearborn ChemicalComjiany, Lliicago, looking after the latters railroad business inthat territory. In July, 1911, he left that company to becon-echemist and engineer of tests of the Frisco System,
