He received amilitary education in his native coun-try, which stood him in good stead inthe land of his adoption. In 1858, when he had just attainedhis majority, he came to the UnitedStates. For three years, from 1858 to1861, he was engaged in business inSt. Louis, Mo. Here his military tastes soon ledhim to attach himself to the local mi-litia, and in 1861, when the war brokeout, we find him a captain of mountedrifles. When President Lincoln calledthe people to arms, Captain Bendelwas one of the first to respond, and asthe State militia cast its lot with se-cession, he immediately resigned hiscommand.
