Herehe grew upand was edu-cated. Whenin his nine-teenth year heKEv. J. M. MCGUIRE. commeuccd active life as a teacher, and by his own exertions acquired suffi-cient means to take a thorough college course. He graduated atthe State University in 1855, finishing the entire curriculum afteran attendance of nearly four years, and received the degree in 1858. In 1857 he took charge of the academy at Green-field, Mo., where he taught; and at the same time engaged in thestudy of the law, two years after which (in 1859) he commencedthe practice of law at Eolla, Mo. In 1861 Mr. McGuire enlisted in the Confederate Army; serv-ed the entire four years as an officer, and was surrendered at. LITTLE BONNE PEMME ASSOCIATION. 423 Memphis, Tenn,, in 1865. Eeturning to his duties in the school-room, he taught a high school in Kentucky, in 1866, and here,as the chief of sinners, he obtained a hope in Jesus, made apublic profession and was baptized. This event occurred in1868. From the commencement of his Christian life he waszealous in the Sunday-school and prayer meeting. He enteredthe ministry by ordination at Port Eoyal, Ky., March 1, 1870,and at once gave himself wholly to the work of preaching thegospel, and has thus continued ever since, never having an idleSunday, nor ever lacking a support.
