Doughtys ministry in Flushing is chiefly interesting because itwas in connection with him that we find the first reference to Underhill, an official of the town, who was the most famous Indianfighter of his day. We first hear of him as an officer in the Britishforces. He came to Massachusetts with Winthrop, in 1630, and wasfrequently employed by the Colony as a leader in expeditions againstthe Indians. He was also professedly a religious enthusiast, much givento sanctimonious expressions in his writings, but of known impurity oflife. But Underhill was a good fighter, and that seemed, in the eyesof his contemporaries, to have atoned for his many imperfections. He. 11 FLUSHING AND VICINITY
