PREFACE THIS volume does, not claim to be atactical, or strategic history of thecampaigns of which it treats; it aimsrather to be a narrative of the every-day lifeand experience of the private soldier in campand field — how he lived, how he marched, how he fought and how he suffered. No soonerhad some of the volunteers reached the front, and been subjected to the hardships and expo-sures of army life, than they fell sick, were sentto the hospital and were discharged withoutpassing through any serious campaigns. Otherswere wounded early, were disabled and werenever able to return to their regiments. Themore fortunate passed sound and unscathedthrough battle after battle and campaign aftercampaign
