Doxford crane tanks at work in Pallion shipyard on the River Wear in Sunderland. The Sunderland Echo of Friday, 18 December 1970

Doxford crane tanks at work in Pallion shipyard on the River Wear in Sunderland. The Sunderland Echo of Friday, 18 December 1970 carried a heading “The old Pallion yard workhorses to retire” and thus heralded the end of an important tradition in British locomotive history. The heading referred to the last working crane tanks in the country which were to cease duty at Doxford’s Shipyard in Pallion, Sunderland, on 29 January 1971. Crane tanks originated in the second half of the last century and were employed both in the works of main-line companies and in heavy industry where bulky and awkwardly shaped loads had to be handled.
