Lisbon, Portugal - 4 April 2017 With a history dating back to prehistoric times, Lisbon is one of Europe and the worldÕs oldest cities. Now the capital of Portugal, it is located on the Atlantic Coast - EuropeÕs only capital to be thus located -and the banks of the River Tagus. The iconic Padr‹o dos Descobrimentos - the Monument of the Discoveries - celebrates the epochal Portugese Age of Discovey during the 15th and 16th centuries, when great explorers departed from this spot - on the north bank of the Tagus River - to explore and trade with India and the Orient. The monolithic stone and cement construction was inaugurated in 1960, during the fascist dictatorship of the country. The striking design is shaped like the prow of a caravel ship, and features many famous explorers, monarchs, artists, scientists and cartographers.
