Valles Marineris (Mariner Valleys) is a massive system of canyons near the equator on Mars. The canyons are many hundreds of kilometres long and several kilometres deep in places, dwarfing similar canyons on Earth. This is the central portion, including the canyons Hebes Chasma (top left), Ophir Chasma (upper centre), Candor Chasma (across bottom), and Melas Chasma (upper right). The image's vertical scale is four times exaggerated. Data obtained by the High-Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on Mars Express, using data from 20 orbits. Image published in 2012.
