Palomar Mountain Hale Telescope dome. Two men are on the rim of the dome at lower right. This dome houses an optical telescope called the Hale Telescope, named after the astronomer George Ellery Hale when it was completed in 1948. At about five metres (200 inches), it was the world's largest mirror telescope until 1976. Many important advances in astronomy took place here, such as the first observation of a brown dwarf star and the first optical spectrum obtained from a quasar. The dome is located at an elevation of 1867 metres in the Palomar mountains, California, USA.
