Industrial pollution, seen from the International Space Station (ISS). North is at top. The bright blue area is a lake full of industrial sludge. The minerals in the water create the colour. The lake has formed behind a dam at the upper end of the lake. This prevents the pollution flowing into the Ohio River (across centre). This is Little Blue Run Dam and Reservoir, near the Pennsylvania-Ohio Border, USA. The pollution is from the burning of coal to produce electricity. Towns (grey) are on the banks of the river. This area is around 25 kilometres wide. The ISS orbits the Earth at an altitude of around 380 kilometres. Photographed on 26 April 2002.
