Apparatus used to test a sample for the presence of an alkane or alkene. Alkanes are saturated hydrocarbons, whereas alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons. When mixed with bromine water, alkenes react with the bromine to decolourise the solution. In contrast, alkanes do not react (unless ultraviolet light is used to initiate the reaction), leaving the solution a brown colour.
