Matabeleland andMashonaland form two out of the three provinces intowhich the British South Africa Company have divided theirterritories, the third being Northern Zambesia, and the threetogether being given by the Company the common name ofRhodesia. V. charter, to Orders in Council, and to such conditions as have ^\ recently been laid down by the Imperial Government. The northernmost town of the Cape Colony is IMafeking T/ie Bech-on the Molopo River, about seventeen miles south of the pygfec-border. A straight line drawn due north from Mafeking will through the Victoria Falls on the Zambesi. IMafekingis very little to the north of 26° south latitude, and theVictoria Falls are just north of 18°. The Falls thereforeare about 550 miles due north of Mafeking. The straightline drawn as suggested will run through territory ownedor claimed by Bechuana tribes, but far the greater partof the area in question is desert land, and the Bechuanakraals or towns are to be found mainly on its eastern side,towards the frontier of the South African Republic.
