PREFACE This book is an endeavor to put a working knowledge of nervousand mental diseases into the hands of students and mere compilation, even of an encyclopsedia, would have been com-paratively an easy task, calling only for a judicious aggregation ofmaterial. In contradistinction, the purpose and limits of a treatiserequire the selection and clinical verification of facts, and to thismost important element of my work the leisure of seven years hasbeen devoted, ouly two of which, however, have beeen required forthe actual composition. A teacher must know what to omit, as theforce and permanence of his teachings will depend upon his strictavoidance of non-essentials.
