He was appointed postmaster by Lincoln on his accessionto the office of President in 1861. and held the office undersuccessive appointments until he resigned in 1879, ^t whichtime he left his store, living a retired life in the village after-wards, though occasionally doing some business for histownsmen, settling estates and assisting in the disposal offarm produce for his neighbor farmers. A genial, pleasant, affable and kind-hearted man, he mademany friends and few, if any, enemies. He died May 20th,1884. Nathaniel Smith of the 19T11 Century. Nathaniel Smith, son of Quartusand Abigail (Clark) Smithwas born in vSunderland, July 15th, 181 i. Being of a refined. HISTORY OF SUNDERLAND. 235 and yet of a strong character, he won the regard and esteemof the community in which his entire life was spent andexerted a marked influence in it. While possessed of a genialnature, he was sufficiently embued with puritan principles totake a firm stand for right wherever he saw it, and his helpand personal influence were continually relied upon in thevarious branches of church work. He was for some timethe efficient superintendent of the Sabbath school. He be-longed to a musical family and had a remarkably fine tenorvoice, and also made excellent use of the violin. His fatherbefore him led the church choir at intervals for many years,and Nathaniel at an early age assumed the responsibility oftraining and leading the chorus choir, often composed offorty or fifty voices.
