In 1765, he appeared as a poet, bythe publication of his Traveller. The celebrity which this poem procured itsauthor, was the cause of his introduction to the most eminent literary charactersof the day. In 1766 appeared his well-known Vicar of Wakefield, which atonce secured merited applause. He also, about this time, composed one of hismost successful works, a history of England, in a Series of Letters from a No-bleman to his Son, which, for its elegance and liberal spirit was usually attrib-uted to Lord Lyttelton. In 1768, his comedy of The Good-Natured Man, wasacted at Covent-Garden with but indifferent success, and he applied to the OLIVER GOLDSMITH. 319. His poeti-cal fame was greatly enhanced by the publication of his Deserted Village, in1770, for which he could hardly be induced to take the proffered recompenseef £100, until satisfied that the profits of the bookseller could afford it. In1772 he produced his comedy of She Stoops to Conquer, which was completelysuccessful. He did not, on this account, neglect compilation, and besides aGrecian history, he supplied the booksellers with a History of the Earth, and Animated Nature, composed out of Buffon, and others, in a manner which wasboth amusing and instructive, although the scientific acquirements of the authorwere not suffici
