Hit over balls to him so that, forexartiple, they shall pitch about Chase 3 and 4 on theService-side. A basket-full of balls might be profitablyused for this purpose ; the Marker would not mind. The advantage of practice inside the Court is its means one can correct faults one by one, and canattend to that which, during the flurry of a game orMatch, one cannot notice with full power of this, the knock-up which should precede everygame or Match is a condensed form of a great deal ofthis practice inside the Court. *^ ^ w. CHAPTER XXXVII FOUR-HANDED GAMES Four-handed or Double games are comparativelyrare. Against them is the fact that they do not givemuch exercise ; and, besides this, as we remarked aboutthe Double game at Racquets, if the Court is (and Ithink it is) of the right size for a Single game, it is ofnecessity too small for a Double game. Another reason against it is that players so seldomplay it that they do not know any of the ordinaryABC of play. On one historical occasion, when four ofthe greatest living Single players met, the result waslamentably unsatisfactory. A player like Lord Windsoris more useful in a Four-game than many who, in aSingle, could perhaps give him as much as good Single players (as at Lawn Tennis) do notnecessarily make a good combination. With regard to the position of the two players, it is aquestion whether one should be forward and the otherback, or whether both should be back. If one be for-ward, then he himself is useful
