Nanomolecules on graphene. Computer graphic showing the tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) probing individual molecules (red and grey) as they adsorb on a single-atom thin sheet of carbon (graphene) bound to a ruthenium metal substrate. The shape of this surface is the yellow-orange region, with the bumps showing the presence of individual atoms. The tip of the STM is the cone-shaped structure at top, with the green colour representing the voltage applied to produce the image of the surface.
