The harbour and town of Heimaey, seen over the lava field formed by the eruption of Eldfell in 1973, Vestmannaeyjar Islands, southern Iceland. The eruption lasted nearly 5 months and nearly destroyed the town. Almost all the inhabitants were evacuated on the night of 23 January.
