Charles Lindbergh and Spirit of St Louis. US aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh (1902-1974) with the Spirit of St Louis, the aeroplane in which he made the first solo transatlantic flight. This flight took place in May 1927. Lindbergh took off near New York, USA, and flew for over 33 hours to reach Paris, France, over 5700 kilometres away. Spirit of St Louis, a steel monoplane built by Ryan Airlines, was metres long with a wingspan of 14 metres. Photograph published in 'The March of Commerce' (1927), volume 4 of 'The Pageant of America: A Pictorial History of the United States'. This was a 15-volume series that commemorated 150 years since the founding of the USA in 1776.
