A cobblestone cross in Broad Street, outside Balliol College, Oxford, marks the site where Protestant bishops were burnt at the stake during the reign of Mary I: Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley 16 October 1555, Archbishop Thomas Cranmer 21 March 1556. A memorial to the Oxford Martyrs was erected in St Giles, just to the north, in 1841. Balliol was founded 1263 by John I de Balliol husband of Dervorguilla of Galloway. Main Balliol College frontage on Broad Street is 1867-8 Victorian Gothic Revival by Alfred Waterhouse.
