Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia. Gross specimen of a spleen affected by Waldenstrom's macroglobulinemia (also known as lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma). This is a cancer of the B cells, a type of white blood cell. It causes excess B cells and antibodies to be produced, which thicken the blood. It is incurable, though filtering the blood helps relieve symptoms. It is a rare disease, and mostly affects older men.
