It is in the hardy border that Lilies do best, as they get the benefit of the shade of the surrounding plants, which is so necessary for their welfare; other varieties should be planted in the autumn and are offered in our autumn catalogue. Lilies thrive best in a well-dug, rich, moist soil. Deep planting is recommended—at least six inches deep for most, and more than that for the Speci- osum varieties. All Lilies form two sets of roots—one set below and the other above the bulb. For best effects place the bulbs in clumps ol six or more, with at least an inch of sand beneath, over, and around each one, then cover with soil. Although these Lilies are generally known as hardy, it is advisable to cover the sur- face with leaves or litter in late fall as a protec- tive measure against frost. JAPAN LILIES Auratum (Golden Japan Lily). This superb Lily has flowers 8 to 10 inches in diameter com- posed of six white petals, thickly studded with rich chocolate-crimson spots and a bright golden band through the center of each petal; exquisite vanilla-like perfume.
