Southeast Asia, satellite image. North is at top. Southeast Asia is a sub region of Asia, lying south of China and east of India. It lies on  the intersection of tectonic plates, forming the western extremity of the Pacific Ring of Fire. Indonesia is a long archipelago of islands that form the southwest boundary of Southeast Asia. To the northeast of these islands lies the large island of Borneo. Peninsular Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia comprise the large land-mass in the northwest joined to mainland Asia. The Philippines are northeast of Borneo and Papua New Guinea lies southeast of the Philippines.
