This is the powerhouse, in which are installedfive great water wheels,—oneof which is the largest in theworld, and the generators, capable of deliveringaltogether 19,000 electrical horse power. The waterafter passing down the shaft through the twoeight foot wrought iron stand pipes and dis-charging through the water wheels, escapes througha tunnel about 400 feet long, likewise excavatedout of the solid rock, and emptying back inthe river at the foot of the falls. The wholeconception is very bold, and is weird in aspect as onelooks upon the thundering machinery, nearly three. The electricity generated in the cavityis transmitted on cables up the same shaft which car-ries the pressure pipes, and is led into the transformerhouse above, where the voltage is raised to 32,000through a series of transformers, at which high pres-sure it is transmitted over aluminum lines to the sub-stations in Seattle, 32 miles, Tacoma, 44 miles, Ever-ett, 36 miles, and the several intervening small these places and in very handsome and substantialbuildings the location of which I personal
