BRYANT, Cushing, ship-builder, was born atJNewcastle, Me., July 18, 1797, the only son of Na-thaniel Bryant and his wife Elizabeth Wall of Pu-ritan stock; he comes of one of the oldest and weal-thiest families of New England. His grandfather,Nathaniel Bryant, Sr., of Marehfield, Plymouthcounty, Mass., came to Newcastle in1766, and was one of the earliest toestablish ship-building on the Dam-ariscotta river, but he died shortlybefore the revolutionary war, leav-ing a son, Nathaniel, seven years ofage, to the care of his uncle andguardian. Dr. Jeremiah Barker, ofPortland. This Nathaniel afterwardextensively developed ship-buildingin Lincoln county.
