Balmerino walked around the scaffold,bowed to the people, examined the plate anddeclared the inscription to be correct. LordLovats last words, when he saw the inscriptionon his coffin-plate, were, Dulce et decorum estpro patria more. The plate bearing his namewas mutilated in digging up.
