Augustus Caesar - Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (63 BC-14 AD), first Roman Emperor, late 18th century. Augustus became Emperor in 27 BC. His rule saw a great expansion of territory under Roman rule. Within the Empire, Augustus brought stability after many years of civil war, and introduced an improved road network, a stable currency and an efficient postal service. Many great buildings and architectural works were built, and art and literature flourished.
