J. a fund of no less than $750,000 to com- bat the spread of the corn borer, of which amount Massachusetts has as- serted it will require at least $500,000. The insect first made its appearance in Bhode Island, so far as any mani- festations of infestation developed, in the town of East Providence, in the month of September. Almost simul- taneously it was discovered in Barring- ton, According to Mr. Dunn, these are the only two places in which the corn borer has appeared in Rhode Island, and, as far as can be determined, it is restricted in these localities to two small farms. Nevertheless, in reporting to the fed- eral authorities immediately after the first appearance of the danger, the state board recommended that the surround- ing localities of North Providence, Pawtucket and Providence be also quar- antined as an extra precaution, al- though the corn borer has not yet been found in any of these three places.
