He was descended fromdistinguished ancestors. His father was chief justiceof the state of Delaware, and on the maternal sidehis grandfather was Gov. Nicholas Van Dyke, whoserved many years in congress, and was the secondpresident of the commonwealth of Delaware. Hewas thrice married: fiist to Juliana Johnson, ofFrederick, Md., second to Jane Shaaf, of Georgetown, D. C, and third to Mrs. Southgate, who sur-vives him. Bishop Johns retired to his residencenear Alexandria, and on the death of Bishop Meadein 1863 he succeeded to the olHce of bishop of thediocese. A long period of usefulness eusued, and atlength on Apr. 6, 1876, he died in the eightieth yearof his age.
