Pygmy shrew (Sorex minutus) running. This is Britain's smallest native mammal, measuring a maximum of 10 centimetres from nose to tip of tail. It feeds on insect larvae, beetles and spiders. The pygmy shrew is found throughout Europe, except for the Mediterranean, and in parts of Asia and North America. It inhabits woodland, grassland and hedgerows, where there is plenty of ground cover. Photographed in Kent, UK, in July.
