In 1SS9 he wascalled to the LIniversity of Michigan as Lectureron Physiology and Histology, and from i8go to1892 he was Professor of Physiology and resigned this position to become Associate Pro-fessor of Physiology at Harvard University, and thefollowing year (r893) he was made Professor ofPhysiology at Johns Hopkins University, where hestill is. Since 1899 he has also been Dean of theMedical Department of that university. In 1890the University of Michigan conferred on him thehonorary degree of Doctor of Medicine, and in1901 Trinity College, Hartford, made him Doc-tor of Laws.
