I desire to say a few words as to the reasons which haveinduced me to publish this book. Its primary object no doubt is to form a record of familydocuments. The want of such a record has been a sourceof trouble and expense to me. Last year I had occasion, at the instance of my friendDr. Reeves, the Dean of Armagh, who was making someresearches into the topography of Fermanagh, to make amore systematic examination of my Fermanagh deeds thanI had before done ; and it occurred to me that, in theabsence of a County History, I might be able to compilefrom them a narrative which would not be devoid ofinterest, at least to a limited section of the public, especi-ally at this time, when attention is so much dhistoryoftwoulst00belm
