West of this pointthe ice tongue reached a pointconsiderably farther south, andit had sufficient strength to ad-vance well up the slopes of therange, but was never able tosurmount it. From here onthe moraine is found lying firsthigh up upon the northernslope of the range, with thedistance increasing between itand the range as we go fartherwest. In the western portionof the district it is nearly 15miles north of the range. Exceptionally heavy depositsof drift are known to occurin the following areas: , T. 61 N., R. 15 W., andextending from there on up tothe northeast in a belt approx-imately 2 miles wide throughsees. 19, 30, 18, 29, 16, 21, 10,15, 22, 2, 11, 14, 1, 12, T. 61N., R. 14 W.; sec. 6, T. 61 N.,R. 13 W.; sees. 14, 15, 22, 23,T. 62 N., R. 13 W.; sees. 25, 26,34, 35, 36, T. 63 N., R. 12 W.;sees. 30, 31, T. 63 N., R. 11 W.;sees. 20, 21, 16, 15, 14, 11, 12,T. 63 N., R. 11 W.; sees. 3, 4, 6,. 428 THE A^ERMILION IRON-BEARINQ DISTRICT. 8, 9, 10, T. 63 N., R. 10 W. The main moraine has been traced by cou-necting up these heavy diift dejiosits. Its distribution can be seen inlig. 23. In the eastern portion of the area the course of the moraine isessentially that as given in Elftmans paper, referred to above, with but afew minor changes. This main moraine is not, however, the only morainewhich is present in this district. There are several other areas which havebeen observed in which a clearly developed kettle moraine topography ispresent. Such a series of areas have been connected extending from nearthe south shore of Vermilion Lake to the north of east, running approxi-mately along the town line between Ts. 61, 62 N., Rs. 14, 1,5 TT., andthen extending to the northeast across Eagle Nest lakes into the westernpoi-tion of T. 62 N., R. 13 W. This small moraine is for the greater part ofits extent nearly parallel
