Coseley Road Quarry, Bilston Steelworks, Spring Vale, 1920s
Coseley Road Quarry, Bilston Steelworks, 1920s. The Bilston steelworks was founded by Sir Alfred Hickman when, in 1866, he purchased the Springvale Furnaces and built six new blast funaces on the site which was transected by the Birmingham Canal Navigation. The furnaces were hand-fed and the molten iron ran off into pig beds. Despite the crude nature of production the furnaces produced iron of good quality and in large quantities. In 1897 he also purchased the Staffordshire Steel & Ingot Iron Company. The Hickman company was bought by Stewart & Lloyds in 1920.
