Baroness Stael Holstein

Germaine de Stael (1766-1817) was a French woman of letters married to the Swedish ambassador in Paris, Eric de Stael Holstein—hence her title, Baroness Stael Holstein. Her full name was Anne Marie Germaine Necker. Her oppostion to the French ruler Napoleon resulted in her exile first to her estate in Geneva, Switzerland, and later to Russia and England. She wrote two novels, Delphine and Corinne. Her chief work, De l'Allemagne (1811), had a strong influence on French literature .
